The Little Brother Story “May The Lord Watch” Hip-Hop Legacy Documentary

In the ever-evolving narrative of hip-hop’s rich tapestry, the story of Little Brother stands as a testament to resilience, friendship, and an indelible contribution to the subterranean genre known as hip-hop. The recently released documentary, “May The Lord Watch: The Little Brother Story,” directed by filmmaker Holland ‘vacay’ Gallagher, unfolds the saga of a group that shook the foundations of underground hip-hop. Little Brother, consisting of Phonte and Big Pooh, and producer 9th Wonder, emerged from the vibrant hip-hop scene in Durham, North Carolina. Inspired by legendary groups like De La Soul and Public Enemy, they embarked on a mission to carry forward the tradition of developing hip-hop music set forth by their “big brothers.”

The heart of the documentary lies in the intricate dynamics between Phonte and Big Pooh. Their journey, encapsulated through never-before-seen archival footage, contemporary vérité scenes, and insightful interviews, takes viewers on a roller-coaster ride through the formation, rise, breakup, and eventual reunion of Little Brother. At the core of the film is the profound impact Little Brother had on the preeminent 2000s hip-hop landscape. The critically acclaimed debut album, “The Listening,” and subsequent successes like “The Minstrel Show” etched their names in the annals of hip-hop history and culture. However, the documentary delves beyond the music, shedding light on the strains faced by Phonte and Big Pooh as they navigated the challenges of the music industry.

The group shares tidbits of little known history… The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the UBN Made-for-TV Documentary, a fictional network created through comedy sketches on Little Brother albums. This unique storytelling device adds a layer of creativity to the documentary, capturing the essence of the group’s artistic expression. Phonte & Rapper Big Pooh’s friendship, forged in the crucible of their challenging upbringings in the South, faced strains as they came of age in the music industry. However, the documentary showcases the beauty of enduring friendships as the two men reunite and record their 2019 album, “May the Lord Watch.”
