Mello Music Group Release “Tangible Dream” Album with Oddisee
The Oddisee Tangible Dream Album released by Mello Music Group via Fat Beats reminds me of the statement made in the 1980s hip-hop documentary Style Wars “Destroy All Lines,” meaning breaking down all barriers and misconceptions. In the video single “Own Appeal” (shown below), Oddisee starts out by explaining the process he uses to produce his music.
This hip-hop music is for all ages, genders, cities, and global communities. Real grown men talk about some real lyricism. No hyped-up stories of violence or sexing up your girlfriend – just really good music! After finding the single Own Appeal, I played it repeatedly all day for several days. Just like in the 70s and 80s when I found a hot “45” and couldn’t get enough of it. This is truly excellent production!
Oddisee: I am a Sudanese-American emcee and producer from Washington, DC, who currently lives in the gentrified part of Brooklyn. I eat out several times a week, and I also travel the world, sampling the best that cities across the globe have to offer. Do I live in a penthouse loft? Am I dining in five stars restaurants? Can you only find me in the most exclusive areas? Do I own a jet? The answer to all the above questions is most certainly no. I’m just a regular man from Prince George’s County, Maryland that figured shit out.
I discovered at an early stage that I could make a career in an arena dominated by artists that sell false dreams. I realized that although the masses may not know of my body of work, it doesn’t take the whole world to have the world I want. Tangible Dream is a mix-tape dedicated to the deconstruction of our traditional ideas of success & shedding light on the possibility of a sustainable rap life.
The classical lyrics of this mix tape were written in economy class seats, while the beats were produced on long bus trips, and lastly, these songs were recorded in Airbnb apartments. All I ever want to do is make music for a living so I can live to make music. The only dreams I’m interested in are the ones I can grasp and also achieve. It just so happens that anything you want bad enough can always be obtained. Perhaps the world may never know of all my accomplishments, but accomplishments they are, nonetheless.
