Nottz Debut Album “You Need This Music” 2010 VA Release

During a recent conversation about dope production my man Emcee Nemesis hipped me to Nottz, I was unaware of his production style and took a look at a few You-Tube Videos. The man is definitely covering all basses, hailing from Norfolk Virginia Nottz is one of those multi-talented hip-hop artists who raps, produces and gets down on the 1’s and 2’s. With production credits from the likes of Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Rah Digga, Snoop Dogg and others, the man has a proven track record. Expanding on his creativity, the producer presents his M-I-C skills on the debut album “You Need This Music” released October 2010.

The first thing you notice about the album is the sound quality, everything sounds big, wide, heavy hitting, tight low-end and crispy highs. The album begins with a solid Intro, showcasing drums by Travis Barker. The album has that beautiful organic vibe to the music, track 3 “Blast That” delivers a producer / emcee collabo with Detroit producer Black Milk. The late great J. Dilla is represented in spirit through producer Nottz on this album, his influence is shown throughout the project. On Track 4 “Shine So Brite”, the Virgina based producer mentions Jay Dee proclaiming, “You see how people went crazy when he dropped Donuts, and if a sucka didn’t like it, he gotta be fucking nuts not to mess with the Dilla dog”. Influenced by the Detroit vibe, Nottz recruits Dwele on the title track, “You Need This Music”. The song provokes emotion from Nottz, as he proclaims, “Some folks just don’t get it, Ya’ll need this music!”.

The song “How Long Will It Last” showcases the diverse production skills as Nottz flips a previously used sample with a new organic twist, the bass-line is very impressive. As with most albums every song is not 100% dope but the album as a whole is good, showcasing excellent hip-hop production skills. There are tracks that will please hip-hop heads and others that will please mainstream fans, the producer’s rhyming style may divide listeners. For a debut release this project shows us we have much to look forward to from upcoming projects by Nottz, producer / emcee definitely on the come-up!

Following a long line of great producer / emcees such as J. Dliia, Pete Rock, Madlib, Black Milk, Dr Dre and many more Nottz shows us that rhyming over your own beats is often done by some of the best producers to hit the scene. There is no border or global location that can proclaim owner of the producer title, the next great producer may be just around the corner in a local neighborhood near you.

Nottz Bio: Norfolk Virginia native, Nottz’ first major placement was in 1998 with Busta Ryhmes, when he was just beginning a successful production career that now spans over a decade. Nottz’s consistent success over the years stems from not only his natural gift for production and great relationships built with the artists he has worked with but also his love of music, his humility, and his manager, Darryl Sloan, who he has worked with for over a decade. “You Need This Music” released by Raw Koncept Media Group, Inc.

Some of Nottz’s biggest records to date include, Snoop Dogg Ft R.Kelly “That’s That,” Kanye West Ft Lil Wayne “Barry Bonds,” and Scarface Ft Trey Songz “Girl You Know.” Adding to those credits is a seeming never ending list of credits you will find his works with, including Notorious B.I.G, Swizz Beats, Karndinal Offishall, Bilal, Royce Da 5’9, The Game, 50 Cent, Dwele, Murs and Asher Roth just to name a few. When it comes to press on his career and work, Nottz has been featured and mentioned in almost every urban market publication and website, and is regularly referred to as “Your favorite producers favorite producer.”

Most people know Nottz from his production, but the past few years he has been building a fan base and earning his stripes as a respected and talented artist. On Oct 12, 2010 he is set to release his debut album You Need This Music. The album will be executive produced by Nottz himself, his production schedule is still in full motion. Nottz’ upcoming projects include work with Dr.Dre, Bilal, Rah Digga, Scarface, Stacy Epps, The Game, Snoop Dogg and Snoop Dogg’s new group The Hustle Boyz. When asked about his personal goal for his music, you won’t hear the answers like money, fame, cars or clothes. Nottz explains his goal for his music by simply stating “To take over the world one day with my sound.”
