Independent Label Domination Recordings Exclusive Interview
The Digital landscape is the place to release albums and singles in 2010 (some would say the only place). With stores and platforms such as iTunes and Amazon , there are a good number of outlets to buy and hear hip-hop music. But as far as Indie Hip-hop, we’d like to introduce you to one of the digital labels that specialize in that particular genre. Look no further than Domination Recordings, Domination is a label, distribution center, lifestyle hub that caters to the Underground Hip-hop connoisseur. Bringing to the table a large and varied selection of music, Domination is putting in that work, their digital catalog is extensive.
BigNoiseRadio.com recently spoke to the President of the label, D.J. Fisher, and got some much needed info about the electronic imprint holding it down for the independent movement.
Q. Big Noise: What is Domination Recordings? What’s the label’s philosophy?
A. Domination: Domination Recordings is an independent hip hop record label that I started in 2004. We are a small label with a big heart. Our artists are based all over the US from NYC to Florida, to Atlanta, to Cali. We also have artists based in Canada, Brazil and the UK. We have very realistic visions, everyday we keep in mind the importance of consistently releasing quality music!
Q. Big Noise: Explain Domination’s distribution hustle?
A. Domination: I’ve been involved on the distribution side of the biz for mad years. With retail stores closing left and right, we got to control our own destiny when it comes to physical product. I have relationships with stores and distributors that support the independent movement and we continue to keep it moving with them. Our distribution services are exclusive to the label & family only.
Q. Big Noise: Who are your most successful/popular artists?
A. Domination: Success or failure, every release holds a piece of history with Domination Recordings. Some of the more known artists we work with are Count Bass D, Moka Only, Rob Swift, Supastition, Dr Butcher, Majik Most and Breez Evahflowin.
Q. Big Noise: What kind of artists does Domination look for?
A. Domination: Artists who truly have their heart in this, emcees and producers that continue to create that classic hip hop sound that made you love hip hop to begin with. I refuse to sign an artist because he or she might have the hot sound of the week that the majors are looking for. We only release music that we are fans of, music that gives you that feeling you can go back and listen to 10 years from now.
Q. Big Noise: What’s on the upcoming slate for Domination?
A. Domination: Between now and the end of the year you can expect a lot of new releases from Domination Recordings. New music from Kyo Itachi, Moka Only, 2 Hungry Bros & 8thW1, L.I.F.E. Long, Count Bass D & DJ Pocket, Sci Fi Stu, TzariZM & Critical, Arsun F!st, Dr. Butcher & Understanding, Hus of Tha Connection, Breez Evahflowin and a few surprises that I can’t even mention just yet.
Q. Big Noise: What is the ultimate goal for the label? Where is Domination headed?
A. Domination: To continue releasing dope music on a consistent basis, gain more exposure for artists that truly deserve it on a worldwide level and just keep it moving!
In today’s cookie-cutter industry saturated by emphasis on tattoos, jewels and gun-talk some independent underdogs continue to raise the bar with authentic hip-hop music. Releases from Domination Recordings make the Top 20 regularly on Big Noise Radio… stay tuned!
