Sidechain compression can be used for DeEssing, to separate Lead and Background vocals or for Bass Ducking. Today we’re concentrating on Sidechaining Kick and Bass. This means the signal of a kick drum will be triggering the compressor used on a bass. Everytime the kick hits, the bass will be compressed and lowered a little bit to make the kick cut through better and tighter.

Sidechaining takes one sound and uses it to manipulate another sound. Most often you will see it on compressors, gates, limiters, and expanders. However, it can also be found on vocoders, synthesizers, and other effects. It is a really useful feature on compressors and gates because it allows you to place multiple instruments in the same frequency range without clashing… it can make your mix sound great!

How to set up Sidechain Compression (For example in Pro Tools): Send the signal of your Kick track for example to Bus 1. Insert a compressor (which is capable of Side-Chaining) on your Bass track. Select Bus 1 on your Key Input. Enable the Side-Chain. Now us Ratio, Threshold, Release, Attack etc. to adjust your desired compression. Every time the Kick hits the Bass will be turned down or compressed.

Compressor Settings: As a starting point you could use a ratio between 4 and 10 depending on how much the bass should be ducked (how much is actually wanted). The higher the ratio the more the bass will be ducked. Release between 10-50ms. Threshold about -5db depending too on how much compression is wanted. These are starting points which need tweaking depending on the situation and on how much compression or ducking is wanted. Download the Reason 6 Template.

Ducking using a sidechaining compressor… Ducking is the technique used by producers to get that characteristic “pumping” sound. Sidechaining really just means feeding sound into an effect that works on some other sound. But when most people talk about sidechaining, they are really talking about using sidechain compressors and gates to produce ducking.

So, what does a Side Chain Compressor actually do anyway? It uses one of your audio tracks to control the volume of another audio track. To get a ducking sound, it will lower the volume of one of your audio tracks when the other gets loud. This can be done with software or hardware studio equipment.

His voice tone and flow are garnished with that soulful New York flavor synonymous to authentic hip-hop music, no doubt. He’s known for delivering meaningful lyrics over tight slaps from producers who know how to bring the business. We recently caught with Mr Lux to ask him a few questions.

Q. Big Noise: Can you give us a little breakdown about yourself? Where do you hail from?
A. Wildelux: Peace to BNR for the interview. I appreciate it. Now the answer to your question. I’m from the Bronx, New York City. The home and the origin of Hip Hop. A music lover, an emcee and an artist who puts allot of hard work and pride in his music.

Q. Big Noise: Around what time did you get involved with the hip-hop movement?
A. Wildelux: For most people Hip Hop is movement, something to get into. But for me, it is my life! I live it love it and breathe it. It was part of my environment and still is. So when Hip Hop was in it’s infant stages, I myself was a small child.

Q. Big Noise: What inspired you to become an Emcee?
A. Wildelux: WOW! Many emcees! But if i have to name names, I would say Rakim, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, Kool G Rap, ATCQ, Lord finesse, Main Source, Melle Me and the list goes on.

Q. Big Noise: Big up on the new release.. who came up with the name The Sinister Theory?
A. Wildelux: Lord Ron came up with the title.

Q. Big Noise: What message are you trying to get across with this new record?
A. Wildelux: We talk about many things on the album. Not just your typical, getting smoked out, chasing chickens around , I’m so Hip Hop lyrics. It has allot of content and substance to it.

Q. Big Noise: How many projects have you collabed with DJ Lord Ron?
A. Wildelux: DJ Lord Ron and I have worked many projects together. We did a 12 inch back in 2005 entitled “BX 2 LA connect part 1 and 2″. He also did some production on my album entitled “Hustlemania” and the list goes on.

Q. Big Noise: Off the dome or pen and paper?
A. Wildelux: I use to do it off the dome, but I would say I am more of a writer. I got into the business side of things back in 1993 and at that time, I was always taught to write and record in abundance. I had to learn the science of putting an album/ ep together. Picking the right tracks to try to create a great album.

Q. Big Noise: Can you tell us about any other Emcees you’re collaborating with?
A. Wildelux: I’m working with many artist, but on this album D-Strong, John Robinson and Dj Ralph M( From Funk Doobiest) are featured on the album.

Q. Big Noise: Do you have a favorite recording studio you like to operate from?
A. Wildelux: I personally record at home.

Q. Big Noise: Are there any other producers you like working with?
A. Wildelux: I’m not picky with producers. I try not to get caught up in the name of who is doing the production. If you got that heat then you got that heat.

Q. Big Noise: Where can people buy your music past or present?
A. Wildelux: You find it on the internet. iTunes, Amazon, CD baby etc.

Q. Big Noise: Where can we see a DJ Lord Ron and Wildelux performance, any tours?
A. Wildelux: Hopefully in a town near you. Always trying to make that happen. Promoters please holla at us.

Q. Big Noise: Do you do your thing on the social Network?
A. Wildelux: Yea you can hit me up on facebook that’s where I be most of the time.

Q. Big Noise: How can folks contact you for business?
A. Wildelux: They can hit me at Willylux718@gmail.com Serious Inquires PLEASE. Much respect!

When you hear of music from the duo of Jay Dee & Madlib, you should expect something creative and original which represents classic elements of Hip Hop. Recently placed in The Mixx on DJ DN3’s Milk-bone show for Big Noise Radio.

“Louder (Blast Your Radio Theme)” is also featured on Madlib Medicine Show #11: Low Budget High Fi Music, now available from Stones Throw Records.

A 28-track hip-hop album of exclusive Madlib collabos w/ A.G., Guilty Simpson, MED, Oh No, Strong Arm Steady and others. Karriem Riggins pops in for a Supreme Team session, Madlib & Oh No debut The Professionals, and we hear a Jaylib-era track from their never-realized second album. Low Budget High Fi also contains several Loop Digga instrumentals and of course interludes, outerludes and probably quaaludes. From the Madlib Medicine Show #11: Low Budget High Fi Music here is a track from Madlib & J Dilla from their never-realized second album:

Jaylib was formed in 2002 as Madlib & Dilla recorded separately in Los Angeles and Detroit. Their one album, Champion Sound, was released in 2003. When J Dilla moved to Los Angeles, he, Madlib and J Rocc began doing shows together as Jaylib, performing together for the first time at the Madvillain record release party in April 2004. Madlib and Dilla collaborated primarily through the exchange of beat tapes, occasionally reworking each others material, or chopping the same beat in a kind of recorded call-and-response.

Flipping these samples and composing original music using vinyl is definitely an art-form. Getting the drums, the samples and the bass line to mesh properly takes science and knowledge. All aspiring producers share the dream of making a living from the music. It takes passion, persistence and drive… The Audible Doctor recently sat down with High Rollers NYC to discuss how he found Hip Hop, how his group The Brown Bag AllStars formed and to show his process of how he makes beats.

High Rollers Genus | The Audible Doctor Interview:

Artist BIO: “Born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin The Audible Doctor fell in love with music at a very young age. As a child he spent countless hours with his toy keyboard on the kitchen floor playing what he called his “muget” (music), that same drive and passion has followed him through the years. His parents recognized his talent early on and tried to nourish it by finding outlets for him to learn and grow musically. Piano lessons gave way to joining the city choir which gave way to guitar lessons and so on until Audible Doctor finally found his own niche with Hip Hop.

Introduced to Hip Hop through his older brother The Audible Doctor instantly became infatuated and knew it was something he wanted to be a part of. By his sophomore year in high school he began collecting records and DJing at friends parties, school dances, and anywhere he had the opportunity. Equipping his room with two 15? speakers (that the neighbors across the street complained of when their walls started shaking), Audible Doctor would often have friends over for DJ sessions in his bedroom. After the purchase of a $15 Radio Shack microphone those DJ sessions became full on freestyle sessions with DJs and Emcees taking turns on the turntables and the mic. Later, when The Audible Doctor got his hands on a digital 4-track recorder he began writing rhymes, making beats, and recording himself and other local artists.

After graduating high school in 2002 The Audible Doctor moved from his hometown of Madison to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend college hoping the larger city would provide a better music scene but after a year at the university he decided he needed more. The following fall he packed his bags and moved to New York to attend an Audio Engineering & Recording school in Manhattan. After graduating from the school he began interning at the world famous Fat Beats Records store in Manhattan where he met his fellow group members and they formed The Brown Bag AllStars. The creation of The Brown Bag AllStars marked the beginning of a new chapter in The Audible Doctor’s music career. He became more serious about releasing projects and continued to sharpen his live performance with the group. In the next 6 years while recording and performing he worked his way to the position of buyer and manager of the Fat Beats New York store where he met many of the artists he has collaborated with. Being the force behind the legendary store front put The Audible Doctor in the center of a thriving music scene and he poured that inspiration and knowledge into every project.

In 2010 The Audible Doctor moved on from Fat Beats to pursue music full time and he continues to release projects with his group as well as solo projects and collaborations with other artists.”

That is the true measure of a man and an Emcee in this age of pop culture, we’re all responsible for what we say on the MIC, these are the seeds we feed our youth!

Professional Hobbyist is a ten track journey that examines a man who is a blue collar man by day and an emcee by night. The project highlights the struggles associated with vocation, educational goals, personal life and a time consuming hobby. I make it perfectly clear that I would rather make a living as an emcee as opposed to completing a Masters in Business Administration. The album features production from This Is Tomorrow, Manu Beats, LX-Beats, Skipless, Muneshine and more. BrainStormers crewmate, Dj Grazzhoppa, adds scratch hooks on three of the ten tracks including the title track. The project also boasts a feature from long time collaborator Don Streat.

This is a great interview! Take a minute to play the “20 for 12″ Beat Mix joint below while you peep the interview.

Q. Alkota: Take a minute to introduce yourself to the readers who might not be familiar with you or your production.

A. Beatnick Dee: Peace to everyone reading. My name is Beatnick Dee. First and foremost I’m a producer, also a record collector and dealer, sometimes Dj, journalist & interviewer and Rep for Tres Records. Some of my production credits include Co$$, Blu, Sene, Joe Scudda, The Regiment and more.

Q. Alkota: You recently moved back to Cali (LA specifically) from the UK to be closer to the music scene and pursue your passion for music as a career.2. Can you share some of your experiences in making such a big leap?

A. Beatnick Dee: Creatively and career wise, LA is where I want to be. I spent 2 months in here last year, met some great people and had a lot of fun. It had been an idea to move to Cali at some point. The trip went better than expected and cemented my idea, so I ran with it. I’m very lucky because I was born in San Francisco, so I have dual nationality and it wasn’t a hassle to sort out a visa to make the move. I miss friends and family of course but it all boils down to one thing. I believe in my music enough to go where ever I need to be.

It’s like starting all over again, building up a new network, meeting new people and making new friends. Having lived most of my life in south west England, in the heart of the countryside it’s been a huge change. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some good people, dope producers and rappers and I’m loving LA life overall. Very thankful to be here!

Q. Alkota: I understand you are a representative for the local LA independent hip hop powerhouse label Tres Records.3. What type of working relationship do you have with Tres Records?

A. Beatnick Dee: I’m basically a Rep/Intern for Tres. I do a lot of the writing which includes artist bio’s, press releases and controlling our social networking sites. I interview artists, sort out stock, send out records etc… All kinds of things.

Through my collaborations with Co$$ I got in touch with Chikaramanga, he liked what he heard and I was able to meet up with him whilst in LA. I happened to be at the label when we were putting together Co$$’s debut ‘Before I Awoke’ which I produced the title track for. It was really dope to help out on a release I was a part of and see the work that goes into putting out a release.

We’re putting out House Shoes’ debut album June 19th. This is a really big release for us so we’re very excited. Tres have been going for 8 years now and we’re one of the few independent Hip-Hop labels still pressing vinyl.

Q. Alkota: Rumor has it you are the go to guy when it comes to digging for records and samples. Do you dig for yourself only or do you offer digging services for other producers and beatmakers?
I do both. I’ve been digging for quite awhile now and I’ve been lucky enough to get my fingers dusty all around Europe, Thailand, and now the States.

A. Beatnick Dee: I sell a lot to other producers. People know they’re going to get some crazy obscure loops from the records I offer.

I’m a hip-hop producer of course, so I have the ear for samples, loops, drums etc. I go through all styles from electronic sounds to dramatic soul, psych, prog, reggae etc… I deal in a lot of foreign breaks so I provide stuff that people have never heard before. Samples that you wouldn’t be able to find easily and that will make your music stand out.

Q. Alkota: Do you do any non sample based production, i.e. sample free/original music?

A. Beatnick Dee: I do. Most of my music starts with some form of sample though, then I layer a lot of instruments and synth sounds over the top. My album will have a few non sampled beats. I like to experiment and having original tracks definitely has it’s advantages.

Q. Alkota: Your drums are dope! Can you give us any of your secrets to getting such unique and tight sounding drum samples?

A. Beatnick Dee: Cheers! Layering. That’s the main thing. Drums are so important to me, almost the most essential part. The right EQ, tuning and sounds are what can really make a beat. If you’re using a sample, I feel that you have to do the loop justice if it’s something crazy. If the sample is dope but the drums don’t have the right swing/sounds/pitch/knock then the track as a whole is really lacking in my opinion. Definitely chopping breaks instead of using the whole thing.

Q. Alkota: Do you have any instrumental projects/beat tapes out right now?

A. Beatnick Dee: ’20 For 12′ presented by kevinottingham.com is my new Beat Mix. It’s a 20 minute continuous mix of brand new, exclusive, unreleased, for sale and beats from forthcoming projects. It’s basically to showcase the sound I’m trying to promote as well as my variety.

Q. Alkota: Charging for beats is always a topic of interest to up and coming producers and beatmakers interested in making a little scratch off their production. The problem is, most people don’t know where to start and how much to charge.

A. Beatnick Dee: Start at about 5 grand per beat. Hahaa.. nah it aint the 90′s anymore, everyone knows that. Charge what you think it’s worth, work out how much the artist is willing to spend, work around their budget if you’re down to work with them.

Bare in mind the particular beat, what it’s for (free/sold project) and if you feel it’s one of your best tracks then you’d probably want to find the best place for it and get a fair price. If you’re just starting I see people selling anywhere between $100-350 for beats. If you’ve been producing for awhile and have a few solid placements with well established artists then upwards of $500.

Q. Alkota: Can you give some advice to the new guys on how much to charge for beats and how to start making some money off beats?

A. Beatnick Dee: It can be hard to know when to work for free. Try to build a relationship with an artist you like, mutual gain is very important. Find someone to do a joint project with. Which placements will give you exposure? If it’s someone you really want to work with from a fan perspective, then working for free is cool. It can be a great achievement working with artists you admire. Trading is a great thing too, as producers we have that advantage. Get a verse or song from giving an emcee a free beat. Hone your craft. Make sure your beats are of good quality before trying to sell, that way you’ll build up a good rapport. Network with artists and when you do have beats for sale you’ll have a chain of people to work with. Getting your name out there first is important though.

Q. Alkota: What projects are you currently working on for 2012?

A. Beatnick Dee: My debut production album ‘Creative Medicine’ which will feature Joe Scudda, Co$$, Sene, Denitia Odigie, Koncept & J57 of Brown Bag All Stars, Dynas, Blame One, Sav Killz, Hasan Salaam The Regiment, Late Bloomers, MadKem, Saheed and more. I also have beats on a lot of these artists’ previous or forthcoming projects. Working on more placements too. I have a track on Vinnie Paz’s next solo Lp coming later this year. Working on a couple more beat projects as well.

Q. Alkota: When you aren’t digging for samples & records or making beats, what do you do for fun?

Skateboarding, hiking, hanging with friends and fuckin around. I try to check out hip-hop shows when I can. Or just any music events. Now I’m in LA I’m spoilt for choice! I’m getting to see people I never had the chance to, living in the sticks of the Uk.

Q. Alkota: For the tech heads… what software or hardware setup do you currently use to make your beats?

Logic on a macbook pro, MPC 1000, M-Audio Oxygen 49, M-Audio Micro Track II, KRK Rokit 6 Monitors, Technics 1200 MK2 turntable.

Q. Alkota: For artists and labels interested in contacting you about your production, what’s the best way to get in touch?

beatnickdee(at)gmail.com for all inquiries including beat sales, samples, drums, etc. Big shouts to Alkota for the interview and thanks to everyone reading this!

A year in music. Hip-hop, rap, jazz fusion produced by Madlib & mixtapes of Brazilian, be-bop, prog rock & psychedelic culled from a 4-ton mountain of vinyl. When Madlib launched his Madlib Medicine Show last year, the original idea was simple: twelve releases, one per month, alternating between original works and mixtapes spanning different genres. It took a little longer than planned to hit number 12 – so we ordered up a bonus, number 13 – and, since we figured that there might be some new converts to the fold, we decided to package all 13 albums together. We call this collection The Brick.

So, if you’re one of the uninitiated, with The Brick, you get it all: Madlib Medicine Show No. 1: Before The Verdict - hip-hop vocal album feat. Guilty Simpson; Madlib Medicine Show No. 2: Flight To Brazil - 80 minutes of Brazilian psych, folk and jazz; Madlib Medicine Show No. 3: Beat Konducta In Africa – hip hop beats inspired by and based on obscure & independent African vinyl gems; Madlib Medicine Show No. 4: 420 Chalice All-Stars - all Jamaican sounds, 80 minutes. Complete with Los Angeles medicinal marijuana guide; Madlib Medicine Show No. 5: History Of The Loop Digga - Madlib’s early years, 1990-2000, from beat cassettes produced for local rap crew Crate Digga’s Palace; Madlib Medicine Show No. 6: The Brain Wreck Show - - psych-progavante- freak-out-funk rock; Madlib Medicine Show No. 7: High Jazz – all new Madlib productions from his collective of jazz groups and musicians known as Yesterdays Universe; Madlib Medicine Show No. 8: Advanced Jazz - a jazz music course with no grades, lecturer or tests - just a room of dusty jazz vinyl and Madlib at the turntable; Madlib Medicine Show No. 9: Channel 85 Presents Nittyville - hip-hop album feat. Frank Nitt; Madlib Medicine Show No. 10: Black Soul - the Disco era, 80 mins, mixed by Madlib; Madlib Medicine Show No. 11: Low Budget High Fi - hip-hop of dirty demos produced by Madlib, with Oh No, Karriem Riggins, MED, Strong Arm Steady, AG, Guilty Simpson, J. Rocc and Jaylib; Madlib Medicine Show No. 12: Raw Medicine (Madlib Remixes)- part mixtape, part beat tape, featuring a host of un-suspecting collaborators that run the gamut from thugs, street poets, star emcees and underdogs. The show runs 60 minute with 30+ tracks; Madlib Medicine Show No. 13: Black Tape – the bonus Medicine Show and sequel to #12.

Here are a couple more track’s from Madlib Medicine Show #12: Raw Medicine. Inspectah Deck & Raekwon verses are from two different original tracks - one by 7L & Esoteric, the other from Big Pun:

The Madlib Medicine Show Series is a combination of Madlib’s new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other underefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta’s 4-ton stack of vinyl.

An artist with the complete lyrical package of content, delivery, and vocal distinction. Roc Doogie is one of these rare talents, able to win over the listener with either an incredibly entertaining live set, or timeless recording. His debut solo release Roc Paper Scissors embodies all of his artistic attributes, and one listen through is convincing enough to label Roc Doogie a master of the craft.

Although he’s put out several releases with his four-man crew Phenetiks, Roc Paper Scissors is the perfect re-introduction of Roc Doogie as a solo artist. He has selected a handful of his closest cohorts to lay down production for the album, including Deto 22, Dirt E. Dutch, Defnyshn, and JK1 the Supernova, who also makes a guest appearance on the track “Yardie Funk”.

The only other guest appearance comes from his partner The Protege on the album opener “Cycle”, which also includes the rest of the Phenetiks crew, with DJ SirCumference on the cuts and Deto 22 on the beat. Ten tracks in total, with an array of moods from track to track. Whether you’re listening to the passionate ode to the art “Dear Whoever”, or the bitterly delivered distaste for wackness on “Live Bait”, there is no denying Roc Doogie possesses the secret ingredient that has been discovered in so few before him.

He released his second album on his own independent label B.I.B. Records with the group called, The Lethahedz. In 2005, he released the book called, Hip Hop Decoded, which was viewed by most as controversial, yet was labeled as an underground classic by Hip Hop purist. Today, the Black Dot lectures on the history and philosophy of Hip Hop at colleges and universities.

Q. Big Noise: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
A. Black Dot: Yes that Hip Hop is spiritual, not just entertainment. Our ancestors left a blueprint for us to return to greatness and it’s through the music, art, dance, and body.

Q. Big Noise: How did you hook up with professor Griff?
A. Black Dot: Professor Griff watched one of my lectures on DVD and the rest is history. He called me up and we have been working together ever since.

Q. Big Noise: How many books have you written?
A. Black Dot: Only one at the moment, but I have three new ones coming very soon. Hip Hop Recoded, The parent’s , teachers, and mentors guide to understanding Hip Hop. and You Gotta Laugh to keep from crying which is my life story.

Q. Big Noise: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to our readers?
A. Black Dot: We are the ancient ones that the world is waiting for. stop looking for answers out side of yourself…Hip Hop is a gateway that can lead you and i back to greatness.

Q. Big Noise: Since writing Hip Hop Decoded how has the Hip Hop community accepted it?
A. Black Dot: Most people have embraced it, but when I wrote it, I said that it would take at least five years before people would catch on to what I was talking about, and here we are 7 years later and i sell more books now then i did when the book was new.

Q. Big Noise: If you had to write the book over would you change anything?
A. Black Dot: No. I spoke from the heart. even though time have changed a bit, I wrote it from the perspective of the times.

Q. Big Noise: What are your current projects?
A. Black Dot: The three books that I mentioned. I also recorded my first album in nearly twenty years called “Walk With Me” that can be purchased on iTunes as well as my website. I travel and do lectures around the country as well.

Q. Big Noise: Where can fans purchase your book titles?
A. Black Dot: ibooks.com. amazon.com, and www.matrixofhiphop.com

Q. Big Noise: Any upcoming tours, how can promoters contact you?
A. Black Dot: I can be reached at matrixofhiphop.com, as well as on Facebook @Duane BlackDot Bowser.

Representing NY, the hip-hop community and the black community… we recently caught up with the man behind the MPC to ask him a few questions about his get down.

Q. Big Noise: How are you feeling sir… whats the history on the name King I Divine?

A. King I Divine: Peace peace, I’m feeling good, thank you for the interview.. Well I got the name King I Divine from being a big Wu-Tang fan.. I heard Ghostface say it in “Who’s the Champion” and I always said that I would use that name if I got into the music game. I felt the meaning of the name was unique and best represented me and what I am about.

Q. Big Noise: What first caught your attention in regards to hip-hop music?

A. King I Divine: Well I’d have to say the way the old school samples were chopped and arranged to make something new that my generation could vibe to. That’s the part about Hip Hop that really caught my attention. That you could take a record from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and flip it into something dope that I could relate to as a kid when I was growing up.

Q. Big Noise: What influences did Queens New York have on you as a young man?

A. King I Divine: Growing up in Queens was dope. Just growing up in New York was great. I grew up in what they call the “Golden Era” of Hip Hop and New York was the place to be at that time. So the vibe in NY when I was a teenager was so crazy and it made me want to do Hip Hop. A lot of the top artists at that time were from NY and Hip Hop was really diverse and had a lot of different styles to it. It really influenced me in how I make my music today.

Q. Big Noise: When did you transition to the ATL? How has that effected you music?

A. King I Divine: I moved to ATL after I graduated high school in 2000 to go to college. Living in ATL hasn’t really effected my sound as much. Even though I’ve been doing music all my life, certain events and life situations lead me down the path to pursue doing music more and taking it seriously and making a career out of it. I love New York, but I’m thankful for ATL as well.

Q. Big Noise: Who are some of the producers that have inspired you along the way?

A. King I Divine: RZA is my number 1 favorite producer of all time. I always admired the way he was the mastermind behind the Wu-Tang Clan and all the things he’s done after helping Wu Tang become a pillar in Hip Hop. He’s gone on to do clothes, acting and scoring films and recently the headphones. That’s the kind of producer I aspire to be. I want to help usher in the new breed of Hip Hop with these dope up and coming artists and eventually get into film scoring. I would say DJ Premier is also a producer who has inspired me a lot. A lot of my supporters tell me I have a very “Premo esque” sound, which is dope because I feel like Premo is a legend in Hip Hop so I want to study and learn from the best and create my own legacy/sound.

Q. Big Noise: “synonymous with the MPC…” What has the Akai MPC brought to your music game?

A. King I Divine: When I started making beats, I started on software using Reason. I would always find myself feeling unauthentic or like I wasn’t a “real producer” because I wasn’t using hardware. So I really started using the MPC because my fav producers used one and I wanted to feel “real” (lol!) That was my thought process early on when I was learning how to produce but now that I’ve grown and been making music for a while it doesn’t matter what you use as long as its hot and it works for you. Hardware or software doesn’t matter, just rock it. I am glad I started using the MPC though because I was able to grow a nice sized following on Youtube. They would come through and watch my videos, showing a lot of love and support. It encourages me to keep on going so I’m very thankful for my supporters and the MPC!

Q. Big Noise: Organic production, soulful layering, bounce on the drums - where do you find inspiration?

A. King I Divine: I get my inspiration from the music itself. Growing up my pops would always be blasting the soul records in the basement and I would be jamming to the melodies. I’m also Guyanese and Panamanian, we listen to a lot of soca, reggae and salsa music. So I try to incorporate all of those elements I grew up with into my music.

Q. Big Noise: Do you prefer to sample from vinyl, MP3’s, WAV’s… does it make any difference?

A. King I Divine: Being a purist I prefer vinyl, BUT vinyl can get expensive so I don’t mind sampling anything.. cassette, vcr tape, mp3’s anything, as long as I can get the sample I want.. I’ll sample it.

Q. Big Noise: The production is royalty, definitely see the evolution… how did you come up with the Crown Jewels concept?

A. King I Divine: I got into making beat tapes by listening to J Dilla, I love the way Dilla’s tapes were and I wanted to do something similar to that. So I was like, ‘Well my name is King I Divine, so how can I make something that represents me?’ then I was like ‘I’ma call these tapes the “Crown Jewelz“. I made my first one and I got a lot of love and great feedback from it, so I decided to keep going. I’ve made 3 so far, I’m not sure if I’ll make a 4th one though. I might start a new series..(lol)

Q. Big Noise: What about the Flipped *Jodeci Edition*, what got you cooking up those ingredients?

A. King I Divine: Jodeci is one of my all type favorite groups. I was sitting in the truck one day blasting Jodeci and I was like ‘yo I’m going to sample this joint..’ and I made one beat and then I just kept going. I sampled a lot of my favorite Jodeci Joints and just made a tape out of it.

Q. Big Noise: East 54th brings that nice lounge vibe - “she fell in love with NY…” sexy spoken word blessing your tracks, can you elaborate?

A. King I Divine: “East 54th”, I wanted to showcase more of my original beats with little to no samples, I felt like people got to hear the “Crown Jewelz” series and that was more of real underground head nodding beats. I wanted to come a little different on “East 54th” and have more of a groove. I wanted to show a lil diversity and give my supporters another side of me. I felt that you had to be in a certain type of mood to listen to “Crown Jewelz” but “East 54th” could fit a lot of different moods and be played at different times and occasions. As I was starting to work on the project, I got up with a poet from London named LD Henriquez. We vibed in NY and we came up with the concept for her to write a poem about her first time being in New York and I would craft the beats around her poem making it like a journey through the city. I felt like her voice and style would compliment the project nicely and it came out dope.. I’m really proud of that album.

Q. Big Noise: Any upcoming releases you want us to know about? Are most of your releases digital?

A. King I Divine: I just released an album with Brooklyn emcee ScienZe called “Divine ScienZe” on March 13th and its been getting great reviews! I think its one of my best projects to date. I’m also working on an album with my brotha blctxt (blacktext) which is coming out later this year. LD Henriquez and I will be working on another album as well. Yea most of my releases are digital except for “Crown Jewelz 3″ which is digital but I have hard copies of those as well

Q. Big Noise: Are you working with any artists, it seems your focus has been instrumental projects so far?

A. King I Divine: ScienZe, Blctxt, LD Henriquez, D. Julien.. Those are some of the artists I have upcoming music with. I will probably be dropping another instrumental album soon, I just have to see how I can work that into this years schedule.

Q. Big Noise: Can you tell us about the project going down with 2 Dopeboyz?

A. King I Divine: The “Divine ScienZe” Album with ScienZe and me is presented by 2dopeboyz. It features artists Blu, Sene, D. Julien, Maffew Ragazino, JohnNY U, QuESt and vocals from Jazz Horn, NiaChene, Britan Parker, poetry from LD Henriquez and scratches by DJ AmDex. Its a really dope project that came toggheter organically. Its FREE! So make sure you take a listen but most of all share it with everyone you know!

Q. Big Noise: Are there any artists you’d like to collaborate with in the future?

A. King I Divine: I’d like to collaborate with the new school of dope artists and make a movement to get Hip Hop back to a balanced state. Right now, its just saturated and very one sided. I want to be a force in helping to even it back out!

Q. Big Noise: What contributions do you feel hip-hop has made to us as a black community?

A. King I Divine: I feel like Hip Hop has always been a voice for our community exposing the injustices and the struggles we go thru daily. I’ve also learned a lot of life lessons through Hip Hop music. Hip Hop is a voice; it can be used to teach, correct, inspire, make us feel good, dance, cry, love and I think we should push Hip Hop to do more of those things.

Q. Big Noise: Thank you so much for the interview, any final thoughts or shouts?

A. King I Divine: Thank you for having me, I appreciate your time. I just wanna shout out all my supporters, friends, family and loved ones.. Thank you for EVERYTHING!

Yamaha NS10 History:

What is it about the Yamaha NS10? If any piece of pro audio hardware deserves that over-used term “industry standard” it has to be the NS10. In a professional audio world continually seduced by the next big thing, where plug-ins can provide a near instantaneous GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) fix, where products live or die thanks to their quantity of bells and whistles, and where the number of contemporary nearfield monitors that could apparently do the job of an NS10 is almost beyond count… the venerable, tired old Yamaha is the one piece of kit that still appears in almost every photograph of a smiling engineer posed at his desk.

The usual story goes that Bob Clearmountain, one of the first of that new breed of ‘name’ engineers wanted a pair of monitors to carry with him from studio to studio so that he had a consistent reference, and he wanted something that he felt was representative of typical domestic hi-fi speakers. It is sometimes also said, usually by those for whom the abilities of the NS10 are a closed book, that he chose the NS10 because it was the worst-sounding speaker he could find. That, as I say, is the usual story. The trouble is, it’s not true: the real story, recounted by engineer Nigel Jopson in a letter published in Resolution magazine in 2007, does involve Bob Clearmountain, but is different in almost every other respect.

Bob Clearmountain’s Tissue Bob Clearmountain’s other significant claim to fame is probably that he was the first to use tissue paper over NS10 tweeters in an attempt to dull their over-bright balance. He resorted to tissue paper after the maintenance staff at The Power Station had refused to modify the speakers by wiring resistors in series with the tweeters (why he didn’t simply put an HF shelf EQ in the monitor chain is a question for which I don’t have an answer). Yamaha’s second-generation NS10, the NS10M Studio, had a less bright balance, so removing the need for tissue paper. There’s a technical analysis by Bob Hodas examining the effect of covering the NS10 tweeter with various types of tissue paper.

His chops on the fader and finesses on the vinyl is indeed legendary. The arrangements he brings to the turntable are complex and organic. These deejay skills translate into the lab when it’s time to deliver tight hip-hop beats!

In the tradition of that good ol’ BOOM BAP that we miss so much, comes the first banger “Mirage” off the upcoming full length album “The Sinister Theory” from the dynamic duo DJ Lord Ron and Wildelux. The BX to LA connect has a seamless chemistry that easily comes across to the listener as if they have been working together for years and years. Although this is true in a sense of having done work in the past, this upcoming project is their first full length together.

First single off the upcoming full length album “The Sinister Theory”… the new single “Mirage” is a prelude to the flavor yet to come. This classic hip-hop album, “The Sinister Theory” will feature John Robinson, Derek Strong and LA Mix Master DJ Ralph M.

In regard to beat making and production the same holds true; some cats got it, and some cats don’t. Since mid 2008 a young producer hailing from the ATL has been making noise on the MPC 1000 drum machine. The fact that we missed this cat for the last 4 years is a testament that the internet is saturated with serious musical talent. This up-and-coming hip-hop producer has definitely “got it”.

Initiated by the “Crowned Jewelz” project in June 2008 King I Divine is definitely putting it down with soulful hip-hop production. Walking the same creative footsteps synonymous with greats such as Black Milk, Boonie Mayfield, Madlib and the late J Dilla. King I Divine is putting in his work! To date his discography is 5 projects deep. Most of them instrumentals with a few guest appearances by up-and-coming emcees. This is the same formula that lead to the success of one of our greatest hip-hop producers - J Dee! You’ll definitely want to stop by King I Divin’s Band Camp page to peep the projects. Stay tuned for our forthcoming interview with King I Divine, no doubt it’s going to be informative.

Check out this dope new producer, amongst others, making dope beats on video at Big Noise MPC. To date my personal favorite release is “Crowned Jewelz Part 2″. The organic timing, the soulful pallet of samples and the respectful nod to golden era boom-bap. The producer brings it to the next level, taking us on a journey, out of the box, in to the mind-state of creative expression. Take the journey… “Crowned Jewelz Part 2″ the beats are intoxicating, guaranteed to put you in an inebriated head nodding stupor!

Artist BIO: King I Divine; synonymous with the MPC and the mastermind behind the ‘Flipped: Jodeci Edition’ and Crown Jewelz 1,2 and 3 beat tapes. Raised in Queens, NY but an ATL resident, King I Divine has been creating music since 2006. Arguably, his love affair with Hip Hop was birthed years before, considering that his early influences included RZA, DJ Premier, Pete Rock and the late J Dilla to name a few…

We recently caught up with this multi-talented producer and emcee to speak with him about his history, ongoing projects and his perspective on hip-hop music.

Q. Big Noise: What’s going down… how did you come up with the name Moka Only?
A. Moka Only: My homie P came up with Moka.. cus I’m Moka and I’m the only one. That was back in 1990.

Q. Big Noise: What can you tell us about your first hip-hop experience?
A. Moka Only: My first hiphop experience was not documented. It was like the universe..it jus always ‘was’…at least from the mid 80’s on.

Q. Big Noise: How is the hip-hop scene in Canada?
A. Moka Only: I don’t know what the scene is like in Canada. Its a huge country. Ive been there a few times tho. That’s kinda like asking “what is the scene like “in America”..sounds funny, right? Most ’scenes’ are regional ,not national…at least when it comes to hiphop. Anyhow, I dwell in Vancouver.. its near Seattle– for those who are geographically disabled.. haha. Im not sure what idiot wouldn’t know where Vancouver is but I’m here to help those that don’t. ..cus I’m special like that and girls adore my scent.

Q. Big Noise: Has living there influenced the way you bring your sound to the table?
A. Moka Only: Living in the pacific northwest probably HAS colored my sound.. I’m not sure exactly how..everyone knows the coast up this way is an incredible place and can be inspiring, minus the cities and all they dramas.

Q. Big Noise: If you had to compare, what’s the biggest difference between hip-hop in Canada and the States?
A. Moka Only: Once again I really see differences in regionality so I’m not sure how to answer that one. In every region in north America you’ll find different vibes and styles poppin. I’m a west-coaster but early on was probably more influenced by the New york sound.

Q. Big Noise: You like to experiment with different instruments on your projects, got any favorite instruments?
A. Moka Only: My fave instrument is probably my samplers, honestly.. other than that I go fairly heavy on the minimoog - it delivers.

Q. Big Noise: Can you let us know who are some of your favorite Canadian emcees?
A. Moka Only:I’m really not sure.. I don’t listen to rappers anymore. Um, I’m my favorite, i suppose. Sounds like an asshole thing to say but its true.

Q. Big Noise: If you had your choice to work with any artist who would that be?
A. Moka Only: I would like to just work by myself. I don’t desire to chase people down.. if they really wanna do somethin they know how to reach me. I’m just in my own world..I stays under a rock. I’m the only one who can make what I want to hear.

Q. Big Noise: Can you shout out any future projects that we should know about?
A. Moka Only:Here’s a few I have ready to pop or am working on. I have a full length LP with Ayatollah producing and its comin out on nature sounds late spring, its re tar tar!!!!! I have Airport 6 droppin spring sometime too. Have been building with Lil b,the based god about doin some wild shit.. we’ll see where that goes, I just completed an album with LMNO, Mr Brady and my man Jules Chaz.. and I’m working on a few mix-tapes and instrumental projects too. I also have about ten albums of unreleased material from the early 2000s that i would like to put out along with a coffee table book. We’ll see how that goes. its a monumental project…and of course ZZBRA just dropped..its an album with my man Evil Ebeneezer and we recorded it a few years back and have been letting it ‘ripen’ until it was ready. So check for that. Exciting times. There’s even more shit comin but I don’t wanna be a spoiler so you’ll have to wait and see!

Q. Big Noise: If you had to choose one song or album from your catalog that best describes you which one would that be?
A. Moka Only: Okay..this is an OLD album but I have to say Lowdown Suite…it came out in 2003 and i feel it really summed up what i was and am about. Its personal..i love it.

Q. Big Noise: Where can your fans get the scoop on any of your release or tour info?
A. Moka Only: My fans..I fuckin love them..they can keep locked to @moka_only twitter. Im wild active there plus ‘moka the real only facebook.. my incredible admins run that for me and keep the world posted on my every move. Peace to Live vision Macro Management. I also am starting a new business called Ten Thouzand Starz and will be helping up and comin artists connect with the world through that biz so you,ll be able to check for me there once the site is up. To be announced. Big things!!!

Q. Big Noise:Do you have any last words for our readers? Thanks for the connect!.
A. Moka Only: Word..id like to end this convo by just sayin thank ya for your time and interest and hopefully we can do it again soon.. And to the fans, I love you all. You guys give me the push and you all know I keep a good relationship with you.. I don’t try and look down on anybody. I keep it real. God bless North America.

Indifferent to popular opinion, today’s authentic hip-hop music is not about country ignorance and swagger! “Hip-hop Universal United…” After putting out Beneficence’s critically acclaimed “Sidewalk Science” album earlier this year, Ill Adrenaline Records is back to hit the hip-hop world with another throwback-sounding and classic release.

Rashad & Confidence, two longtime students of the game, finally drop their long-awaited debut album “The Element of Surprise”. This up-and-coming MC/producer duo, hailing from Brooklyn and Philly, merged to create a record with a timeless sound reminiscent of hip-hop’s golden era but with a fresh, updated feel. With no guest appearances or other producers involved, Rashad & Confidence embody the sound real hip-hop heads yearn to hear, going back to the times of Gang Starr and Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth.

The soulful hitting and sample-based boom bap beats courtesy of Confidence capture the pure essence of classic hip-hop production while Rashad’s deep and conscious lyrics slice through each track with topics ranging from various life issues to relationships or just raw lyrical display.

Push the play button and get taken back to a time when hip-hop only produced classic albums.

Presented through a collage of moving pictures, this “remissness” style video takes you on a hip-hop journey through the eyes of Constant Deviants. The track “Won’t Stop” released by Six-2-Six records brings lyrical flow and voice tone that represents grown sophisticated hip-hop music - loved by Big Noise Radio listeners worldwide.

M.I. & DJ Cutt Revisit Their ‘98 Single with Earnest Sequel. In 1998, when Constant Deviants were fresh on the scene, the duo released “Can’t Stop,” an ode to hip-hop that put the Baltimore- and Brooklyn-based duo of M.I. and DJ Cutt on the map. The single served as the foundation for Constant Deviants’ now loyal fan base, a swarm of supporters that eventually led Constant Deviants to form their own label, Six2Six Records, a brand they now use to sell vinyl all across the world.

Now, 14 years later and with their latest album Diamond scheduled for release this spring, Constant Deviants are revisiting the track with a sequel, of sorts, fittingly titled “Won’t Stop”. “The song is a letter to hip-hop,” explains M.I., “and since it’s Part Two of the record we put out in ‘98, the point was to capture the feeling of NYC in 2012.” Musically, they strike a perfect balance between the two eras, with DJ Cutt’s crackling, soulful chops and driving drums, and M.I. at his most earnest – and strongest lyrically – recounting the story of how he fell in love with the music he wound up dedicating his life to. The video, directed by Jimmy Powell and IHenry, captures much of the same classic feel, with shots of M.I. and Cutt making their way across the Brooklyn Bridge and around New York City.
